Volunteer Spotlight: David Keller

For about three years, David Keller has been one of the first faces guests see when they walk into the Concord Coalition to End Homelessness’ Resource Center. Calm, attentive, and quietly welcoming, David brings a steady presence to a space that can change minute by minute. His work may appear simple — greeting guests, checking mail, coordinating showers — but every task is grounded in his belief that dignity begins with acknowledgement.

“I try to remember people’s names,” he says. “Knowing someone as a distinct individual matters. It changes the way we see each other.”

A Role Rooted in Presence and Listening

At the Resource Center, David works mostly at the front desk, a post that requires flexibility and attentiveness. Some days are routine — sign in, check mail, prepare the shower schedule. Other days, a guest may arrive eager to talk, needing someone who will simply listen without rushing them along.

“You never know what a day will bring,” David reflects. “Sometimes someone just wants a cup of coffee. Sometimes they want to talk about what’s happening in their lives. Being present for both is important.”

He has also gained a deeper understanding of how broad the spectrum of housing distress is in our community. Not everyone who comes to the Resource Center is unhoused — but many are living in precarious situations: struggling with rent, living with unreliable roommates, or barely maintaining stability. “It’s difficult for anyone to grasp the full scope of housing distress in Concord,” David says. “But here, you see how many people are trying to start finding their way back.”

Why He Keeps Showing Up

When asked what keeps him returning week after week, David’s answer is humble but revealing: volunteers make the work possible.

“It’s an easy volunteer opportunity in terms of scheduling,” he says with a smile. “But more importantly, volunteers take on the tasks that free staff to do what they’re trained to do. Case managers shouldn’t have to stop their work to check someone’s mail. Volunteers help the whole system function.”

To David, these responsibilities aren’t small. They are essential. The day-to-day operations of the Resource Center rely on volunteers who show up with consistency and care — and he is proud to be part of that support.

A Steady Source of Welcome

What stands out most about David is his quiet dedication to creating a space where people feel seen. Whether he’s offering a warm greeting, learning a new name, or listening when someone is ready to share, David helps build the kind of environment where guests can take their next steps with dignity.

We are honored to feature David Keller as the first story in our new Volunteer Spotlight series. His history, compassion, and steady presence reflect the values at the heart of CCEH’s mission — and we are deeply grateful for the role he plays in our community
