Volunteer Opportunities During COVID-19

We do have several opportunities for volunteers who are interested in helping at our daytime Concord Homeless Resource Center, located at First Congregational Church of Concord, at 177 N. Main Street in Concord.

Brand new volunteers: Please email office@concordhomeless.org, or call 603-290-3375 x208 and leave a message with the best way to reach you.

Previous CCEH volunteers: Please email julie@concordhomeless.org with your availability and interests.

Volunteers are needed to:

  • MOST URGENTLY NEEDED: Monitor guests’ use of showers and laundry
  • Assist staff in office with handing out mail, coffee and supplies to guests
  • Implement cleaning protocols during Resource Center operating hours – disinfecting medium and high touch surfaces every hour
  • Clean and organize the Resource Center in the Tom Fredenburg House (no guest interaction)
  • Sort incoming donations of clothing and supplies (no guest interaction)
  • Garden and maintain property landscaping (no guest interaction)

The state is also collecting names of willing volunteers at NH Responds – click here to visit this site.

We could not operate the way we do without the countless hours donated by all of our volunteers. We welcome volunteers to help with our daily operations as well as with special events and skill-based projects. If you’re interested in volunteering, we’d love to talk with you about the best opportunity for your available time and skills.

The Housing First volunteer opportunities are one-on-one and have flexible times. The Housing First Concord Program provides case worker support and rental vouchers and helps clients who have experienced chronic homelessness find an apartment and settle in long term. Volunteers are needed to provide transportation to medical appointments, grocery shopping, or other errands for clients who are permanently housed but lack transportation. PLEASE NOTE THESE OPPORTUNITIES ARE NOT AVAILABLE UNTIL SOCIAL DISTANCING REGULATIONS ARE NOT IN PLACE.

NOTE: DUE TO COVID-19, THERE WILL BE NO VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES AT THE WINTER SHELTER JANUARY – MARCH 2021.

The below opportunities will hopefully resume in December 2021.

The Winter Shelter has 3 different positions for volunteers who will have direct contact with guests from December through March. PLEASE NOTE THESE OPPORTUNITIES MAY CHANGE BASED ON THE RECOMMENDATIONS REGARDING COVID-19 SAFE OPERATIONS.

  • Evening shift from 6:15-9PM where volunteers will help check-in guests, put guests’ belongings in bins, assign beds and be a second set of eyes and ears for the shift leaders;
  • Overnight shift from 9PM-6AM where volunteers will have a bed in the office to sleep and be there to provide assistance to the shelter Manager and staff if a guest falls out of bed, or if there is any kind of emergency.
  • Morning shift from 6-7:30AM where you will assist in waking guests, returning their belongings to them and cleaning up around the shelter.

Volunteers at the Winter Shelter are not just an extra set of hands for shelter Managers and staff. They are sets of ears and empathetic hearts for our guests. As simple as this sounds, it makes a very positive impact on the environment. As a shelter volunteer, you will get a better sense of the homelessness issue in our community; in just a few hours of volunteering you will gain a true understanding of the challenges some fellow Concord-area residents are facing.

There are other opportunities to help out at the shelter after the guests leave. Between 8am and 11am Monday through Friday volunteers are needed to help with the on-site laundry and clean the shelter.  For more information contact office@concordhomeless.org
